Paulo Dybala's goal earns visitors comfortable win

Image
Cristiano Ronaldo helped provide the winner on his return to Manchester United as Juventus cruised to a 1-0 Champions League win at Old Trafford. Ronaldo had an immediate impact against his former club to silence the masses, firing a cross into the middle which eventually fell for Paulo Dybala to net his fifth goal of the season with just 17 minutes on the clock. From then on in, it looked like there was only going to be one winner, as Juventus dominated possession and created the better openings, only to be kept at bay by David de Gea in the United goal. Paul Pogba did almost snatch an unlikely point for United late on against his former club, but his fierce strike came out off the post. A first Champions League defeat of the season leaves United's hopes of winning Group H hanging by a thread with Juventus way out in front with three wins from three so far, but Valencia's draw at Young Boys earlier on Wednesday means United remain second, two points cl...

Under-fire Los Blancos unconvincing in Group G victory

Image
Real Madrid turned in an unconvincing performance as they scraped past Czech outfit Viktoria Plzen with a 2-1 win at the Santiago Bernabeu on Tuesday evening. Karim Benzema opened the scoring after just 11 minutes when he headed home Lucas Vazquez's dinked cross to settle the hosts' nerves, but David Limbersky and Patrik Hrosovsky spurned chances to equalise before the half-time whistle. Within 10 minutes of the restart, Marcelo had clipped an effort over Plzen 'keeper Ales Hruska to double the home advantage, but Hrosovsky set up a tense finale when he pulled a goal back with 11 minutes to play. The result sees Los Blancos retain Group G top spot, but the performance failed to ease any pressure on manager Julen Lopetegui, ahead of Sunday afternoon's El Clasico meeting with Barcelona. From the off there was an evident desire from the hosts to react and put their recent adversity to bed, and within five minutes they almost had their wish as Sergio Ramos direct...

Pep Guardiola says Manchester City were 'incredible' in Shakhtar Donetsk win

Image
Pep Guardiola lauded Manchester City's first-half display in their 3-0 win over Shakhtar Donetsk as "incredible", and the best since he arrived at the club in 2016. City dominated the opening 45 minutes of the Champions League clash, having 14 shots and scoring through David Silva and Aymeric Laporte. Bernardo Silva wrapped up the win after the break, but Guardiola was particularly impressed with the first half. "Incredible," he said when asked how well his side played. "Our first half was the best we have played in the last three seasons, since I've been here. We were outstanding, we created a lot of chances. "We were under pressure after defeat against Lyon [in the first group game], but now we are in a good position. We can control our destiny now. It was so important to get this result and we will enjoy tonight and the next few days with this victory. "We have recovered well from Lyon and now it's in ...

Jurgen Klopp says Fabinho needed time but his quality was not in doubt

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has stressed he has no doubts about Fabinho's quality. Following his move to Liverpool from Monaco over the summer, the midfielder did not make his debut until mid-September when he came off the bench in the 89th minute of the Champions League opener against Paris St Germain. Since then he has made two further appearances as a substitute and one start, in the Carabao Cup loss to Chelsea. With Jordan Henderson and Naby Keita both out injured, he looks set to feature in Wednesday's Champions League clash with Red Star Belgrade at Anfield. Asked it could be a big chance for the Brazil international, who turned 25 this week, Klopp said: "Yes, of course, no doubt about that. It's clear. "It's his birthday [on Tuesday] by the way, so it would be a nice present, eh? "I didn't make the line-up for tomorrow, how we will start, but of course it is very important for us that he's now been here for a few months, go...
